Followers of my Pulse posts and social media accounts will know that I recently attended the Sandler Summit in Orlando, Florida. The theme of this year’s conference was Breakthrough 2018.

It was an incredible two days of learning and self-awareness that left me with many ideas to ponder. Breakthrough 2018 was about asking and answering the hard questions that lead to major breakthroughs.

While I haven’t had any breakthroughs so far, I have started the process of defining the steps necessary to breaking through to that next level of success.

For me, the first step is to identify my breakthrough issue. Just setting a higher goal won’t get me there. What do I need to overcome to advance to a new level of success?

It must be so personal an issue that I can overcome fear, doubt and worry. When I ask myself the question, “what happens if I could do it?” the answer should make fearless, committed, and happy.

Once I identify the issue, the next step is to prepare for how long it will take.

The idea needs to percolate, allowing for the primary idea to develop gradually into its final form.

It will not be one big jump to that new level of success. I’ll set benchmarks to measure success. I’ll reach out to people who will hold me accountable. I’ll give myself permission to fail along the way.

Next, I need to master my self-talk. Crafting and practicing on new “talk-tracks” allows me to move through the five levels to mastery:
1. I can’t: language that is harmful to myself
2. I should: language used to recognize the need for change
3. I’ll try: language involved in making the decision to change
4. I am: language that defines the better me
5. It is: language that confirms universal affirmation

Last step is to change my belief system. I have beliefs that form my judgements on things.

Those judgements provide the fuel for my actions, which lead to results.

Poor beliefs lead to critical judgements. Critical judgements lead to inaction. Inaction leads to poor results.

To change my beliefs, I must make changes that create easy evidence. The easy evidence allows me to shift my beliefs, shifting my judgements slightly more positive. Those positive judgements lead to easy actions which will change my results.

With these steps I should be able to identify and master the breakthroughs of 2018. What challenges do you need to overcome this year? Are you ready to breakthrough?
